Are Your Judgments Costing You Business?
Filtered through our memories of good and bad past experiences, our judgments and evaluations happen in an instant. This happens subconsciously. We're not aware of our how our judgments control our actions. We judge everything and everyone. A lot of the time our judgments and preconceived notions are WRONG! When it comes to business networking our judgements and preconceived notions can really hurt us. For instance;Think about the last time you saw a cop following you in your rear view mirror. Exactly what went through your mind? Were you in reality driving 'incorrectly'?
Just like a cop in your rear view mirror when you see people you judge whether they're "attractive", "fat", "thin", "too loud", "hogging the conversation" and darn near anything else about them. Your mind is reacting to it's pre-conditioned sequence of responses. Which may really hinder you at networking events. I'm not talking about your 'gut' feelings and intuitions which are always accurate. The problem is when we don't listen to our inner knowings. I don't always listen.
Here's a personal example of how "seeing a cop" works. Halle Berry is my favorite actress. A physical attraction which has caused me problems in both my business and personal life. Whenever I meet someone that resembles 'Halle Berry', I ignore my intuition which usually goes something like this:'the inside isn't as attractive as the outside'. Not paying attention to what my intuition says has cost me, both financially and emotionally. When we find someone repelling, it's the same thing happening. Sounding familiar to you?
We automatically make up our minds about other people in 3 to 4 seconds. You've no doubt heard "You Never Get A Second Chance to Make a First Impression". There's some truth to it. We have no control over how others perceive us, regardless of how we dress, look or present ourselves and that's the problem. Our perceptions of other people are all that we have control over.
For your business, here's the bottom line. Don't judge a book by it's cover or a business networking partner (power partner) either.
