Rule One of Business: Get Paid

Getting paid, like you would realise is essentially important in your business because if you aren't being paid, what are you doing in business?

You would be astounded at the amount of business people who have their clients to pay up when and if they feel like it. I know one tradesman who persistently holds bad debts like charms. Why, do you think? Just because he won't bring himself to take the cash and people take advantage of him.

If you permit a client credit, only do it when they have proven their integrity to you by paying cash on delivery (COD) for some period. Also, you need to see whether they have the resources to pay you - if they don't then why do business with them. Don't push yourself into the line of "I need the work" or "I need the sales". It's ultimately in doing the service or providing the goods for free if you do not get paid.

If you are the kind of person who can't demand the money after the service has been done, try these hints:

Tell your client that when the work is finished up, you will require cash or cheque. They will likely have it to hand over at the point of sale and you do not have to ask for your money.

When you give out an initial quote, make sure your payment terms are understandable.

Create an invoice that has your terms of payment plainly printed and send the client the invoice when the task is completed. They will take the invoice and generally know they will pay for it now without you having to say anything. Make up a "nasty boss" who might torture you alive if you can not leave with the cash for the work.

Arrange with your branch to hook you up with Merchant facilities so you can take credit cards such as Mastercard and Visa. The large majority of people use credit cards and it will stop the dilemma of the client not having a cheque book or not having the cash in their wallet.

Otherwise, don't be persuaded against to keep the goods until you have been paid. Remember, until the goods are paid for, they remain to be yours.

If you plan to give somebody credit, be sure you get the following contact details from them some time PREVIOUSLY you permit them credit.

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Bank name and address
  • Account no.
  • 3 trade references with their names, addresses and phone numbers

Once you have all this detail, telephone the banking institution and make for certain that they do operate an account with them. Then, telephone every trade reference and request if they pay their invoices consistently or if they have had any issues with them.

Most people will be willing to tell you if the person is troublesome. If everything is OK, allow them a moderate level of debt, say no more than $500 (depending on your business). Monitor the operation of the account for a few months before allowing this amount to be exceeded.
